New works to improve the access to Playa Chica

Tias City Council, initiated last week new works to improve the access to Playa Chica, in Puerto del Carmen. It mainly addresses sites highly sought after by divers.

The Councils of Works, Beaches and Environment conduct the actions carried out on this beach with blue flag award.Among the works, are highlighted an entire stone wall next to the small Muellito, where, in addition, small benches made of stone wall, will be added, where thousands of tourists and residents will be able to make a stop with views.

With these improvements, the actions to improve the facilities and access which have already taken place in the Pocillos Beach and Playa Grande Beach are continued.

Lanzarote Wine Run 2014

There comes a new edition of the popular Lanzarote Wine Run, and in this occasion the event will be enriched with the Traditional Cuisine Festival.

An idea which comes from the organization of the event with the aim of offering more and new incentives to all participants, fans and followers. We connect sport with gastronomy in a unique environment: La Geria.

Taste Lanzarote will organize a full calendar of gastronomic activities in Mancha Blanca, Tinajo, the nerve center of this year’s WineRun. Our amazing chefs and restaurateurs will surprise us again. Soon, the gastronomic and tasting programme which will please all tastes will be issued.

Lanzarote’s best wineries will also be present offering their wide range of wines, and to complete the event, musical performances and other surprises will be offered.

Canary Island´s Day 2014, May 30th

On the 30th of May of 1983, the first democratically elected parliament for citizens of the Canary Islands was established. In commemoration, each year on the 30th of May the Day of the Canary Island is celebrated.

Puerto del Carmen gets 4 of the 5 blue flags of the island

Only five beaches on the island have achieved the blue flag this year and four of them are in Puerto del Carmen.

The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to more than 3850 beaches and marinas in 48 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean.

The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development of beaches and marinas through strict criteria dealing with Water Quality, Environmental Education and Information, Environmental Management, and Safety and Other Services.

With the decision of the jury of the national Blue Flag Program Lanzarote gets the same results as the previous year, leaving towns like Playa Blanca without a blue flag.

Besides Puerto del Carmen, another municipality that has earned this recognition is Teguise, although only one of its beaches, Las Cucharas in Costa Teguise. On Puerto del Carmen the renowned beaches were the Matagorda, Los Pocillos, Pila de la Barrilla and Playa Grande.

Promotour presents new interactive 360º photos of the Canary Islands

During the year 2013, a team of photographers hired by Canarias Tourism travelled around the Canary Islands in search of the most spectacular places to be photographed.

As a result of this trip, Promotour counts with new audiovisual content: 7 virtual tours which show, through spherical photographs accompained by music, the attractions of each island which will serve of inspiration to visitors.

The tours are formed of 22 landscape photographs, which makes it a total of 154 images of the islands.

Each of them is georeferenced via Google Maps, allowing the user to know where on the island it is and where it is looking. And of course, all of this can be shared on social networking sites and viewed on tablets and smartphones.

IronMan Lanzarote triathlon 2014

The IronMan Lanzarote triathlon is an official qualifying competition in Europe for the IronMan World Championship on Hawaii.

The event awards 40 slots to the 2014 IronMan World Championship that are allocated to age groups according to the number of participants in each group, which guarantees at least one slot in each group. The IronMan Lanzarote race is a 1000 points qualifying event (professionals category only).

Courses

Swim (cut off 2h 20min after race start).
The 3.8 km swim is a 2 lap rectangular course taking place in the Atlantic Ocean just outside Puerto del Carmen. The water is around 18-19 degrees, and wetsuits are mandatory.

Bike (cut off 11h 30min after race start).
The 180.2 km bike course challenges participants to a hilly and typically windy ride that brings you through the Fire Mountains and up to the northern part of the island with testing switchback turns and a steep climb up to the most northern point of the island with beautiful views of the neighbouring island of La Graciosa.

Run (cut off 17h 00min after race start).
The run is typically hot and sunny with 3 laps; the first of 19.65 km and two more of 11.27 km keeping the athletes close to the spectators in Puerto del Carmen.

30th Volcano Triathlon

In 2014 the Volcano Triathlon Lanzarote is coming back in full force, welcoming international participants from all sporting backgrounds and of all ages, competing alongside many triathlon starts. Competition for individuals and Relay Teams.

1.5 K Swim – 40 K Bike – 10 K Run: The 30 th edition of this triathlon event, rising in popularity and quality and breaking-records in terms of participation. This event provides an ideal warm up for the Ironman Lanzarote Spain race.

Course description

1,5K Swim
The swim is in the sea water lagoon at Club La Santa on a clearly marked course. The water temperature is approx 21º C and wetsuits are permitted. Water conditions are good and very safe.

40K Bike Course
The bike course consists of one loop starting and finishing at Club La Santa. Upon leaving the Stadium at Club La Santa participants ride towards Caleta de Caballo, then on to Soo, Famara, and towards Teguise, until reaching the roundabout of the road to Teguise. There, riders head back towards Club La Santa on the same route.

10K Run
The run starts and finishes at the Stadium and is a three loop course. Leaving the Stadium you turn left towards the lagoon until you reach the turn point on the road around the lagoon. After the turn point you return to the Stadium and then repeat the same course twice more to complete the 10K.

A tourist called Cameron in Lanzarote

British Prime Minister enjoys his holidays with his family in the areas of greater British presence on the island.

British Prime Minister David Cameron is proving that Lanzarote holidays are far from any kind of institutional protocol. With a slightly reddish after three days of intense sun, european president has decided to become a tourist during the time stay in Lanzarote.

He visited Teguise market and Famara Beach, and on Monday elected the tourist area of ​​Puerto del Carmen, one of the bastions of UK tourism in Lanzarote.

Canary Islands become NASA’s image of the year

Last year, the prize also ended up in the Canary Islands, with a photo of El Hierro’s underwater volcano.

Once again, a picture of the Canary Islands is chosen by internet users worldwide, as NASA’s photo of the year. The winning photograph shows a space view of the seven Canary Islands.

The Earth Observatory of the U.S Space Agency made public on Monday the result of the second contest organized to internet users around the world who choose the best picture of the Earth from space.

This contest, started with 32 images pre – selected by NASA, which have been subjected to vote in pairs, in five rounds in which half were being discarded.

The sport tourism continues to rise

In 2013, the highest number of tourists who came to Lanzarote for sport was registered.

Around 166,745 tourists who travelled to Lanzarote during the last year, did so for sporting reasons.

The amount of tourists that came to do sport last year is the highest that has been recorded and this caused a notable increase in comparison with the year 2012, when they reached 120,574 visitors of these characteristics.

Thus, sports tourism makes up 8.7 of the number of visitors to Lanzarote during last year. Most of them did it for the active tourism offer or for the water sports. Only 0.3% of all visitors came to the island to play golf.
